What is a Forward Air Controller? |
|||
Forward Air Controllers are most often assigned to ground forces, with each infantry company of the Hammer's First allocated their own FAC to support combat operations. In order to properly perform his duties, a Forward Air Controller must manage the location of friendly and enemy units, understand artillery and orbital strike plans, and coordinate with TIE Corps and other allied aircraft. FACs have been used in almost every major military conflict since the advent of atmospheric starfighter sorties. During the Galactic Civil War, Forward Air Controllers from the Starfighter Corps were deployed to both the Stormtrooper Corps and the Imperial Army and directed tens of thousands of sorties against rebel cells, insurrections, and adversarial governments. Though similar in mission, Forward Air Controllers should not be confused with Forward Fires Observers, artillery officers who direct ground-based artillery and orbital strikes on enemy targets. Those are officers of the Hammer's Fist who are specially trained for their mission, just as Forward Air Controllers are trained for theirs. |
